mini bunting madness

*

here is the cake with bunting! i wish i could tell you that it was a breeze to make, but the one pictured was the third attempt. i have a new respect for crafters of mini bunting.

let me first say that i did not know we were out of long skewers, hence the short ones. on to the details: i used a fabric with a loose weave, so it would quickly fray. a wise choice if you want that look (which i did), but a pain to sew that dinky. by the way, paper (attempt, the second) did not have that ethereal feel i sought.

i wrote the letters (fuzzed to respect elfling's privacy) in permanent marker, with an ultra-fine tip. i thought about using stamps, but it seemed silly with so few letters, & so small a size.

the bunting was sewn together, on the machine, using white, & barn red threads. after tying it to the skewers, i secured the knots with tacky glue.

the topper was a huge hit - i definitely will do this again.  making sure to have the proper skewers first, of course. thanks for the inspiration, twirling betty!

thursday things - birthday madness

*

this week's thursday things is about birthdays. actually, with the amount of friends & family who have july birthdays, it's what the entire month is about.

i am still in the planning stage of a certain wee elfling's first birthday party. all i know for sure is: small, bbq, bunting. buntings are popping up everywhere; have you noticed?

* i like this one, by my friend eve.

* mine are on sale right now, by the way.

a google search led me to find the following:

* this patriotic how-to is darn cute.

* wowie wow wow!

* i found elfling's cake topper. brilliant.

* another tutorial.

i found more, but i've no time - my wee bébé bunting is stirring. do you have a bunting you'd like to share?

blue is not just for boys

*

judging from the amount of blue blankets & clothing we were given when elfling was born, i think it fair to say that people think blue is for boys. why is that, do you think? why is it blue for boys, & pink for girls?
the thing is, when i think about all the friends, aunties, & grammies who gifted us with blueness, i am hard-pressed to picture any of them wearing pink. i know i rarely do wear it, & other than blue jeans, manlyman rarely wears blue.
how i see it: as soon as we are born, we're either pink for girls, or blue for boys. our clothing, our toys, our bedrooms - all pink or all blue. as we grow up we shed those restrictions, & begin surrounding ourselves with colors we actually like. by adulthood the majority of us rarely are drawn to the gender appropriate colors. this is especially true for women, though when was the last time you saw men off to work in baby blue suits?
you'd think that would be the end of the pink & blue ridiculousness; but it's not. you see, the same adults who discarded their colors, turn around & foist it upon the next generations of innocent babes. mamas, daddies, grandparents, etc - they are the designers & gifters of more pink & blue! why?! seriously people; i want to know why!
of course there are some brave souls who do not give in to this. some of us dress our children in brown, taupe, gray, white, & black even. i say we start a revolution! we say no more pink just for girls! no more blue just for boys! who is with me?!
of course i would go one step further, & say no more pink or blue!, but then i would have to explain the blue in the above photo. & speaking of the above photo, (how is that for a segue?) do you like my mini birthday bunting? if so, i have 2 for sale in theshop! perfect for your birthday boy or girl. heck, perfect for any old thing you're celebrating. or be like me - put it up for xmas & forget to take it down. yes, ours are still up. let's just pretend they are up purposely, shall we?
ok you're off to buy my bunting (that sounded a tad naughty), & i'm off to join the gigglefest happening in the other room.

in which thehobbit gets help

the day is finally upon us - today is the hobbity boy's number 12 birthday!!! for me that means quite a bit of birthday snuggling, plus a pile of work yet to be done for tomorrow's party. for you it means it's time to draw a winner from the top hat!

i let thehobbit draw the winner. never let it be said that i don't spoil my boy rotten on his special day ;)

& of course, being a great old man of 12, he needed help.

the winner is number 3!!

"Asti said...

30 January 2010

a celebratory give-away!!!

it took a bit of thinking to come up with the perfect something to give you.

after all, we're celebrating a 6th-month unbirthday, & a 12th-year birthday!

i think i found the perfect something - wonky birthday bunting!!!

this bunting measures 6ft, & is oh so sweet. the triangles are ivory damask, with each being a different pattern. they are pinked, & the edges left raw - over time the edges will get that wonderful fuzzy look. the ribbon is a funky magenta grosgrain (yes i still have some of that left!).
if you haven't any kids, or your kids are not of the girl-sort, or if your girl hates magenta - hang this on valentine's day! it's nearly here, you know.
***
so to win this wonderfully wonky birthday bunting, do this:
go to the comments section, & wish my boys "happy birthday". easy as pie. now i want pie. rats.
i shall draw a winner on thehobbit's birthday: next saturday, the 6th of february.
good luck to you!!!!
(the drawing is now over)
