of planes & things

*

on saturday we met friends at the museum of flying for their annual open house. i try not to attend free functions, as (well you know) crowds & i do not do well together. it was impossible to resist the lure of vintage planes, however.

there were many gorgeous ones on display, both indoors & out.

it was not either family's first trip to the museum, but it was elfling's.

he has always loved airplanes, so i was excited for him. i wondered which would be his favorite of the day. at each plane i thought will this be the one?

in the end it was not a plane that made his wee heart go pitter-pat.

le sigh.

bits & bobs, fancyficated

*
bags hanging on my closet's door

with his photo-blog well under way, thehobbit spends a fair amount of time playing with photos. he was just having too much fun, so i decided to play too. having no tardis to feature, & a toddler uninterested in being photographed, i just popped around thebelfry snapping bits & bobs.

lavender in a milk-glass vase

mini-adam accosting the eiffel tower

giggle

a cartoon painted by thehobbit yesterday. whatever could it be...

finally getting illustrations in elfling's playnook. nothing says 'toddler' like ale!

currently on display on our museum wall. the dapper man on the left is my gr-grandfather.

me, with unwashed hair in a ponytail, & no makeup. sorry people, i'm taken.

if you want to fancyficate (real word) your photos too, download picasa. it's does not have a lot of options, but definitely enough for the average jane & her teenage joe. i cannot recall what was done to each, but i'll do my best:
1 - soft focus
2 - cinemascope
3 - beats me
4 - have not a clue
5 - comic book
6 - 1960s
7 - saturation
8 - black & white / polaroid

hey! i remembered more than i thought i would. the photo of lavender is my favorite of the above. i love how it looks like a still from an old movie, & how the milk-glass vase nearly disappears against the white wall.

your turn to go off an play - enjoy!

we built this city...

*

our first outing in washington was, of course, to the famous pike place. we did not brave the absurdly long queue at the original starbucks, but i can now say that i have at least been there.

when next we ventured into town we took the underground tour of seattle. i definitely recommend this. warning: no strollers. i snapped many photos, but it was quite dim below ground.

where it was not dim:

downtown seattle has some pretty buildings.

this photo i took upon arriving home. we detoured through hollywood, so i could play tourist with my camera. this building is the highland towers apartments, smack in the middle of hollywood. little bit of belfrytrivia: in our pre-parents days we nearly lived there. just before signing, we opted for a cute little duplex elsewhere instead.

les fleurs

*
we had a wonderful time seeing new places, & old loved ones. between manlyman, thehobbit, & myself we took about eleventy billion photos. in looking back through my photos i see that i was drawn (loved ones aside) to flowers & buildings. here is a sampling of les fleurs:

1-6 were taken in seattle & snohomish, washington. (yes, i know one of those is a salmonberry, not a flower. shhh.)

7-12 were taken in eugene, oregon. (i was happy to see that my mother's pink roses were being cared for.)

13 was taken somewhere in central california.

i miss the people & places already, but it is wonderful to be back at home.

on a mission

*

if you get a chance to visit the santa barbara mission, do not pass it up. it is the most beautiful place, with gorgeous crumbly bits everywhere you turn.

i confess that i did not listen to anything our guide was saying, as i'd had my fill of mission tours back in elementary school. plus, the idea of people coming to a place to convert the native inhabitants makes my skin crawl. instead i followed along, snapping photos of the gorgeous crumbly bits, & humming quietly to myself.

thehobbit already knew the history of the california missions, & our feelings on the subject, so i wasn't worried that he'd come away thinking how wonderful that those selfless spaniards came here to take such lovely care of the natives who clearly could not care for themselves.

in any case, being a lover of crumbly bits himself, he was paying more attention to the sites than the guide. he did say that she was very nice though.

the interior was just as gorgeous, filled with artifacts. a bit dark, so most of my photos did not turn out well.

except for photographs of windows. just look at how thick those walls are!

i loved this window most.

before long we were back outside. the cemetery was my favorite place. so pretty. so hauntingly pretty.

in which i was thwarted

*

do you remember that pumpkin photo shoot i did back in october? well, i attempted the same thing today with a giant crate of watermelon. what a difference eight months makes. elfling still thought it would be great fun to be plopped into a crate of produce, but he had no desire to sit still for the camera.

nor look at me when i asked him to.

thehobbit offered to try taking a few, but didn't think it was necessary to taking a few good shots. (it's not like it was a crate of cars, or something.)

refusing to be thwarted, i took back the camera, & tried one last time.

perfection.

except for my thumb in the lower right corner.

thwarted.

sigh.

of mustaches...

*

those besticked mustaches, from elfling's birthday, are still being played with. not all have survived, & some are looking a bit done for (do you see the one on the left is missing something?), but that doesn't seem to bother my wee menfolk.

i have to say that i am in love with this photo. we printed a copy onto card-stock, for their grammie's birthday. hers was in color. i had to make it sepia for myself; the old timey mustaches seemed to demand it.

so you don't worry: no, we do not let elfling play with the mustaches unsupervised. those are skewers, after all. he has to have one of us with him, & he's not to run about with one. i am working on a toddler set for the holidays. if i manage it, i'll share the how-to. stop rolling your eyes at me. i did say if. i am not that far removed from reality ;)

have you taken any mustachioed photos of your kids? i'd love to see them.

the posh travelling life - day 3

*

poor manlyman. this day we woke to thunderstorms. at first they were mild, with only the occasional boom, & light rain. he left for the second day of the tournament, not thrilled at the prospect of getting wet, but happy to be playing. not long later he phoned to say the start of play had been delayed. another call like that, then eventually he came back to the suite.

after an hour of waiting, they announced that play would begin, so he headed back to the clubhouse. one hour later the storm was directly above us. thunder boomed so loudly that even i jumped each time, & the rain on the roof sounded like a herd of horses. a few minutes after that & manlyman was back with us. he was drenched, & sad. the day's play was called off. it was too dangerous to run about in the open with golf clubs.

i was super sad for him. the wonderful daddy-o that he is, he did not insist we head home early, nor did he pout. we snuggled in one of the heavenly beds, so elfling could nap, & watched episodes of the dog whisperer. by the time the bébé was awake, the storm had passed, & we headed to the pool. so you do not freak on me: the storm was far enough away that my kids were never in danger being in the water. we could see the lightning bolts quite clearly. seriously, i would not put them at risk.

to the rest of the photos! these are a bit random, i'm afraid.

there were palm trees everywhere. i grew up in southern california, so don't get swoony over them. i do like them wrapped in faery lights, during the holidays however. elfling thinks they're fabulous, hence the photo.

this cracked us up. the greens became so flooded that ducks were able to swim on them. nope, that is not a little lake! manlyman laughed too, but inside i think he was not so thrilled. this was the golf course he had been scheduled to play that day. i made a joke about the duck pga being less fussy about the weather, but it was not as funny out loud, as it had been in my head :)

we had our favorite pool all to ourselves for a time. it was still a bit cloudy when we arrived, but hot enough for a swim. eventually the sun burned through, & people began trickling in. not enough for the resort to open the bar & set out my beloved water stations, but whatever.

we'd already packed, so were able to swim until check-out time. the resort generously extended our check-out by two hours, because of the weather delaying (when manlyman phoned them, the tournament had yet to be cancelled) the start of play.

it was a really nice get-away, i must say. i could get used to the posh life.

elfling's favorite part? seeing the giant windmills on the way home. the swanky bed & swimming tied for thehobbit's favorite. i just loved living the posh posh travelling life being with my menfolk.

have a lovely one, do!
